Summertime in East Midlands Means University Compliance Time

With university life drawing to a close for the summer, the world of university Facilities Managers only gets busier. That’s because summer gives them the space and time to ensure that all electrical items and electrical wiring are compliant and safe for the next academic semester, and Stator Electrical Solutions is on call to support their work.

Halls of residence, classrooms, laboratories, offices and meeting rooms: must all be made safe and compliant. As commercial landlords, universities must ensure that all of their accommodation carries an up-to-date EICR certificate. Electrical Inspection Condition Reports must be undertaken every five years and the report inspects and grades all aspects of a building’s wiring. Stator Electrical Solutions has a team of Commercial Electricians throughout the East Midlands region, on call to visit any university, college or school in Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire, Leicestershire and the surrounding area. Once onsite, they will conduct visual inspections, and perform dead testing, live testing and RCD testing. Fixed wire testing results in either C1 grading, denoting no issues; C1 grading, indicating potential danger; or C3, offering improvement recommended. A current EICR report means that all who use a building’s electrics will do so safely, and any impending problems will be flagged in good time.

All EICR reports must be provided by an NICEIC-approved provider, like Stator Electrical Solutions, and failure to demonstrate possession of an up-to-date certificate can result in fines, invalidation of insurance, as well as potentially unsafe work and study environments.

The other main area of electrical compliance that universities need to focus on is PAT testing or Portable Appliance Testing. Stationary appliances, handheld appliances, IT appliances and movable appliances should all be periodically tested. However, there is no specific law that denotes what you need to test and how often, however, PAT testing is highly recommended and helps your organisation to conform to a number of safety standards. These include the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989, the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998, the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, and the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999.

If you’re a Building Services Manager, Facilities Manager or in charge of any electrical compliance requirements within a university, college or school within the East Midlands area, use a commercial electrical company you can depend on. As well as being NICEIC-accredited, Part P Electrical Safety scheme-registered and part of the government’s TrustMark scheme, all of our engineers are regularly upskilled and criminal-checked. Therefore, you’ll be sure that you have a highly qualified and impeccable safe team of electrical engineers working on-site.
