No matter what type of premises an electrical installation resides in, a means of separating the electrical supply into usable ‘circuits’ is necessary. This is achieved in commercial premises by the use of a distribution boards or several distribution boards.
What is a Commercial Distribution Board?
The incoming electrical supply is fed into a large electrical enclosure that contains several switches. Each of these switches will control a separate part of the electrical installation in your commercial premises. This is a typical distribution board set up and minimises the inconvenience in the event of an electrical fault, allows electricians to use smaller cables safely and can allow work to be carried out on certain electrical circuits without disturbing others.
The commercial distribution board is like the ‘control centre’ of the electrical system and is a vital part of any electrical installation.
At Stator Electrical we are experts in carrying out the installation, replacement, repair and troubleshooting of commercial distribution boards with over 30 years of experience in the electrical industry we are insured, qualified, and registered as approved contractors with the National Inspection Council for Electrical Installation Contractors (NICEIC).

Testing and Inspection of the Distribution Board
Every distribution board will need checking from time to time to ensure that everything is working, there are no loose connections and that safety standards are being met. The importance of a regular periodic inspection is paramount in maintaining a safe premises for employees and the public. Your commercial insurance will also likely require that the electrical installation is regularly maintained and inspected by professionals.
Replacing a Distribution Board
Where an existing distribution board needs replacing in a commercial premises, all the electrical circuits connected to that board will need to be shut off for the duration of the installation. Replacing the Main Distribution board is a large job that involves shutting off all the power to the premises whilst the work is carried out.
It is often best to plan ahead for such circumstances to ensure that the disruption is kept to a minimum. Many companies will not run for 24 hours a day and as such, works can be carried out during natural shut downs or at other times when the premises does not require electrical supply.
Where premises are required to run 24 hours a day, other arrangements will need to be made. Please contact us to discuss your requirements for these situations as we may be able to assist with on-site generators or temporary power supply boards.
Distribution Board Repair
From time to time, parts can fail inside a distribution board and as such repairs become necessary. The damage first needs to be assessed and the cause for failure identified to ensure that any repair does not fail.
Where damage to distribution boards is too great or an effective repair would still leave risk of future failure it may be necessary to replace the distribution board.
Many manufacturers’ parts are still available for commercial distribution boards but with some older board’s parts may not be as readily available meaning that spares are hard to come by.
If you have commercial distribution board problems then get in touch with us and we will discuss your requirements with you.
